Troubleshooting PDF download problems

These instructions are intended as a guide only.  Sutherland Shire Council does not accept any responsibility for any damage or problems arising from following these instructions.

Many documents on this web site are of the PDF (Portable Document Format) file type.  To view these you will need the free Adobe Reader or another program capable of reading PDF files.

PDF files can be downloaded and viewed in 2 ways:

  1. within an Adobe Reader or other PDF reader program window
  2. viewed through your web browser eg. Internet Explorer, Firefox etc.

Which of these you use can be dependent on how your browser and/or PDF reader program is set up.

Linked PDFs

Individual PDF files can be read using either option 1 or option 2.

However some very large documents on this site consist of multiple, linked PDFs.  In order to access these properly you must use option 2 above, i.e. view them through the browser.  If you view it within a PDF reader, this can break the links between it and the other related documents, such as sets of maps.

Setting your programs to view PDFs through the browser

How you set your computer to view PDFs through the browser depends on the type of operating system (eg. Windows, Mac O/S etc), browser and PDF reading program that you are using.  The following are the settings that you may need to change if you are using Adobe Reader - if you are using another PDF reader please check that program's own documentation.

  • Settings on Adobe Reader:  go to Edit - Preferences, under Categories chose Internet, then make sure that you have ticked the checkbox "Display PDF in browser". Save and close the program.  You may also need to close and reopen your browser.
